Don't miss the exhibit! In addition to the letters, there are paintings, books and some of Beatrix Potter's merchandise: stuffed animals, figurines, painted doilies and a game board.

Dickens, A Celebration Of His Work In Pictures:

Events will be held throughout the day on our Day of Dickens Thursday, September 13 and Saturday, October 13, 2012 suitable for children and adults. In addition to sessions with CBIG exhibiting members, we welcome the following participating guests: 


James Armstrong, playwright, he adapted A Christmas Carol for the Epiphany Theater Company and all of Dickens' works for the play Dickens Condensed, Elizabeth Bird, youth materials specialist for New York Public Library system and creator of the blog A Fuse #8 Production a featured blog on School Library Journal, Carol Burrell, Editorial Director of Graphic Universe and creator of the web comic SPQR Blues under the name Klio, Friends of Dickens, New York a literary, cultural and educational not-for-profit organization devoted to activities that celebrate and disseminate the works of Charles Dickens. They present staged dramatic readings of Dickens' works, Michael Patrick Hearn, children's literary scholar and author of The Annotated Christmas Carol, Fred Kaplan, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English at Queens College and CUNY Graduate Center, author of Charles Dickens, A Biography, and Dickens and Mesmerism: the Hidden Springs of Fiction, Mike J. Quinn, founder of The Friends of Dickens New York Chapter; Catherine Robson, Assoc. Professor of English at NYU specializing in British 19c literature and culture, and faculty member for the Dickens Project.

This exhibition programming is underwritten by the Yonkers Public Library Foundation. Yonkers Riverfront Library is located at One Larkin Center in downtown Yonkers, and is handicapped accessible. Parking is available at the nearby Buena Vista Parking Garage.

UPCOMING EXHIBITS FOR 2012

This year we have two fantastic exhibits planned. The first is A Celebration Of Dickens In Pictures to mark the bicentennial of Charles Dickens that will run from August 25 – October 31 at the Yonkers Riverfront Library Gallery. In addition to the exhibit, I’ve organized two Day Of Dickens events, September 13^th that will include the artists’ reception, and October 13^th. Both friends of CBIG and our members will present artist demonstrations, craft sessions, a discussion panel and talks with Dickens experts, performance readings by The Friends Of Dickens, picture book story hours and a book signing and sale of published works by participants. During the exhibit run, check the library for additional related Dickens offerings. All events are free and open to the public, ages 3 and up, great for the whole family.

Our second exhibit ends a fantastic year and begins a new one. Mother Goose Re-Invented will include both traditional takes on Mother Goose rhymes and stories as well as twisted versions like the fractured fairytales that have been so popular in recent years. This show runs from December 6, 2012 – January 16, 2013 at the Flinn Gallery located in the Greenwich Public Library.

WHAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED

2010 marked the beginning of our exhibition program and we kicked it off at the NYPL’s Jefferson Market branch with illustrations based on two children’s book classics chosen by the library staff: The Reluctant Dragon, by Kenneth Grahame and The Magic City, by E. Nesbitt. Dragons and Magic included work by 19 members of CBIG.

The Jefferson Market Library branch is housed in a historic building at 425 Avenue of the Americas at 10th Street. It was originally a courthouse, designed by Frederick Clark Withers and Calvert Vaux in the 1800’s. In 1961 it was saved from demolition and became a library.  Today, the clock tower is a Greenwich Village icon. It was a great venue for the theme of our show with a spiral castle-like staircase lined with stained glass windows that led to the second floor adult section where the original works were on view. 

 

A child-friendly version of the exhibit with copies was on display in the children’s room.
